Slot Music

We've had tapes, records, CD's and DVD's. The next evolution in digital media is Slot Music. Everything has a slot for a micro SD card nowadays. Laptops have a full size slot for use with an adapter, mp3 players, cell phones and even some cameras take micro SD cards. SlotMusic.ORG explains how the media works and is DRM free.

Now is this going to hurt the artists or cause more people to actually buy music since they are free to move it between devices and friends? No more ripping music to a hard drive, trying to get to a wifi hotspot to download a few tunes before a flight or waiting for the album to be released on a file sharing network! PLUS, there is plenty of room on the card for extra content such as lyrics, information about the artist and even a few videos!

Akon, Chris Brown, Daughtery and other artists are participating in this great step forward for freely movable media.

What do you guys think about slot music?

Choosing a wireless provider on a budget.

Okay, so I understand that nowadays we live in a society where we have to have the nicest, shiniest toys. This new attitude also carries into the wireless market.

With four major providers for wireless services to choose from, we have such a large variety of choices for phones, services and extras. AT&T and Verizon have similar pricing plans while Sprint and T-Mobile both share a more budget friendly pricing matrix.

If you want a new phone and are about out of contract with say, T-Mobile or Sprint and have had a great customer service experience and have consistently gotten great signal then why would you want to change to AT&T to get a brand new phone only to spend an extra 30% on your bill?

T-Mobile and AT&T have the wonderful feature of GSM Sim Cards that allow you to buy unlocked phones that are great devices without bumping your monthly bill up significantly.

That's great but what if you need great reception and T-Mobile or Sprint just won't cut it? Well, Verizon and AT&T do offer a larger footprint in rural areas but if you want to use it primarily as a phone then just get the voice package you need.

T-Mobile and Sprint offer more bang for your starting price of $39.99 if you just need voice. Add-ons are also a bit more affordable if you need a Blackberry connection plan or some text messaging to keep in contact with the kids.

While Verizon and AT&T do give you less for your two Jackson bills, the benefit lies in FREE mobile to mobile minutes between other users of Verizon and AT&T. Add-ons are a bit more expensive but the faster data speeds and good customer service off-set the prices.

So, see if budget, customer service or rural coverage are important to you and see what will give you the most satisfaction for your two Jackson's + extras.

T-Mobile Fly Free 2008!

T-Mobile will once again be offering a free FLIGHT for Black Friday. Hopefully with the new online booking system, things will be easier this time around.

If you didn't take advantage of it the first time around, T-Mobile offers users a free flight if they extend their contract for two years to a select list of destinations. It was a great deal last year if you need to take some time off!

From Engadget:

The long rumored HTC Dream handset -- once referred to as "The Googlephone" -- just received FCC approval. The handset is listed as type, "Dream" with a model of "DREA100." The same model also appears with a WiFi Interoperability Certificate touting 802.11b/g WiFi. If indeed this is the long awaited Android phone, then T-Mobile, HTC, and Google are free to announce in September with an October launch as originally planned. FCC label with that DREA100 moniker pictured after the break.

New T-Mobile HTC Dream Google Android Phone Picture!

The new HTC Dream Google Android Phone for T-Mobile's 3G Network looks promising. I'm probably going to be among the first to own one. It will be worth resisting the crave for a Verizon Voyager, which is a good thing since both devices will probably be around the same price point.

The news comes on the heels of Best Buy’s recent conversion of 970 full-size stores to include a Best Buy Mobile section. This is in addition to its 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile satellite stores.

UPDATE: Users Who 'Unlock' iPhone A Source Of Worry For Apple Analysts

January 28, 2008: 04:39 PM EST

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones) -- A significant number of customers appear to be buying Apple Inc.'s popular iPhone with the intention of "unlocking" the device to use on a range of wireless networks.

Several Wall Street analysts raised questions Monday about the number of devices that have been modified to work with other wireless networks and what impact those modifications could have on Apple's (AAPL) business in the future. Unlocking an iPhone allows the device to work on networks other than the one operated by AT&T (T), Apple's exclusive carrier partner in the U.S.

Sprint Losing Customers Quick

Sprint Nextel’s announcement on Friday that it is losing customers more rapidly than expected is making investors nervous about a weak economy’s effect on other wireless companies.

Shares of Sprint fell $2.87, or 25 percent, to $8.70 after it said that it planned to lay off 4,000 workers and close stores to trim costs as its customer base shrinks.

The stock prices of AT&T and Verizon also slipped after the news. AT&T, the largest wireless carrier, was down more than 3 percent, and Verizon, which owns Verizon Wireless along with Vodafone, fell more than 4 percent.

Sprint has been struggling for more than a year, and installed a new chief executive only last month. But the sharp drop in the company’s customer count during the traditionally strong holiday quarter, analysts say, raises concerns that the problem extends beyond Sprint.

“The broader question here is whether this is the tip of the iceberg in a deceleration of the U.S. wireless market over all,” said Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Company.

Industry analysts had estimated that in the fourth quarter Sprint lost about 350,000 contract subscribers — a carrier’s most valuable customers, signed up for contracts of a year or more. Instead, Sprint announced that it had a net loss of 638,000 contract customers.

“It’s the magnitude of the weakness that is shocking,” said Michael Nelson, an analyst at the Stanford Group, an investment firm.

To reduce costs, Sprint said it planned to cut its payroll by 4,000 workers. The company, based in Reston, Va., currently has about 60,000 employees.

Sprintsaid it would also close 125 company-owned retail stores, about 8 percent of the nearly 1,400 in the Sprint chain. The total labor savings, the company said, should be $700 million to $800 million a year.

The cutbacks were the first major step taken by Sprint since the arrival last month of its new chief executive, Daniel R. Hesse. He had been the chief executive of Embarq Corporation, a local-phone spinoff of Sprint.

Cutting costs at Sprint, analysts say, is a logical step, given the decline in business. But they say the company must address other fundamental issues — some unresolved since Sprint completed its $35 billion purchase of Nextel in 2005. The company, the analysts say, runs two networks that use different technologies, and making the transition to a single compatible technology is proving to be more time-consuming and costly than expected.

Sprint, Mr. Nelson said, has also not settled on a consistent marketing strategy. By contrast, he said, Verizon has successfully promoted the quality of its network with advertisements that include the catchphrase “Can you hear me now?”

And AT&T has carved out a position as offering a reliable network and stylish handsets. It was the first to offer Motorola’s Razr and, later, Apple’s iPhone.

“But Sprint has not come up with a broad enough marketing strategy to appeal to a mass consumer audience yet,” Mr. Nelson said.

It is unclear whether Sprint’s travails are solely its own or portend broader troubles for cellphone carriers. Before the Sprint announcement, Mr. Moffett of Bernstein published a report that noted the telecommunications industry has long been considered a safe haven when the economy is weak. “Suddenly,” he wrote, “that looks like a riskier bet.”

The reason, he said, is doubt about the outlook for the wireless business. The industry has been adding 3 million to 5 million new subscribers a quarter in recent years. But by now, more than 85 percent of Americans are subscribers — well into the 90s, if one includes only adults.

The growth in net new subscribers will inevitably slow. Some of the slippage will be offset by increased revenue per user, as subscribers buy more data services like Web searching, video and audio. But the main engine of growth for the industry, Mr. Moffett said, has been new subscribers.

In the last national economic slowdown, the pace of new-subscriber signups fell approximately in half from 2000 to 2002, before rebounding again.

“If we’re headed into a recession,” Mr. Moffett said, “wireless growth expectations are suspect.”

iPhone Update

Apple today announced a free software update for the iPhone, allowing users to find their location using the Maps application; text message multiple people in one message; create Web Clips for websites; customize their home screen; and watch movies rented from the iTunes Movie Rentals.

With its multi-touch user interface and software, users can add new features to their iPhone through software updates. Existing iPhone customers will automatically get the update for free when they sync their iPhone with iTunes.

Maps, one of the most popular applications on the iPhone, has a new interface and adds features such as the ability to find a user's location automatically. With just the tap of a button, the iPhone can triangulate the position using nearby Wi-Fi base stations or cellular towers. Customers can use this as a starting or ending point for directions or to find local points of interest. The new hybrid map view combines map view and satellite view so they can see major street names overlaid on satellite imagery.

Users can also create Web Clips - icons on the home screen that take them directly to their favorite websites. Web Clips can easily track websites that are frequently checked such as news, blogs, sports sites and movie listings. In addition, users can customize their home screen by repositioning any of the icons, and even create up to nine different home screens that they can easily flick between.

The iPhone's new software update also adds the ability to send the same SMS text message to multiple people, and it saves a history of the text messages, so with one tap users can send a new message to the same group.

With Apple's new iTunes Movie Rentals, movie fans can rent movies on their computer, transfer them to their iPhone, and watch them anywhere. Users can also navigate forward or backward through their movies by chapters, select alternate language tracks and view subtitles.

The iPhone software update 1.1.3 is available immediately for free via iTunes 7.5 or later for all existing iPhone customers in the US, UK, Germany and France. New iPhone products shipping from the factory will include the software update and existing iPhone customers will automatically get the update for free when they sync their iPhone with iTunes at http://www.itunes.com .

Mobile Garbage

A growing international trade in discarded mobile phones is helping the world’s poor. But will it poison the earth? asks The New York Times.

"Cellphones are the most valuable form of e-waste. Each one contains about a dollar’s worth of precious metals, mostly gold. And while single phones house far less hazardous material than a computer — an old, clunky monitor can incorporate seven pounds of lead — their cumulative presence is staggering.

Last year, according to ABI Research, 1.2 billion phones were sold worldwide. Sixty percent of them probably replaced existing ones. In the United States, phones are cast aside after, on average, 12 months. And according to the industry trade group CTIA, four out of every five people in the country own cellphones."

Cellular Only

Now that the Internet revolution is becoming mature, are you cellular only? If you have broadband internet, then you can get rid of your landline phone by using comcast's cable internet or at&t's dryloop dsl. Some of the perks of being without a landline is that you will always get your messages if there is only one number you're giving out. Another is that you will save some costs each month by cutting out that extra bill.

I believe in being without a landline just because of all of the telemarketers out there harassing me at dinnertime. I get to choose who gets through and who doesn't with the call screening feature on my Sony Ericsson.

Some of the downsides are higher bills if you are constantly talking on the phone, 911 location, fax lines and children using a phone when they need or want to.

One side note on the 911 comment is that verizon is rumored to have a feature on their phones causing a siren to sound when 911 is dialed on some of their phones giving away the user's location in a robbery or break in crime.

Be aware of some of these points if you are thinking about going without a landline in the future!

Sony Ericsson Loyalty

Let's stop for a moment to discuss why I enjoy Sony Ericsson products. To start off, this opinion is not close minded. I have owned phones from each major brand. Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, etc.

First off, their build quality and design is wonderfully balanced. In owning both flip phones such as the w300i and candybar style phones such as the k550i, i have not come across any build quality or design flaws.

Second, they have great connectivity features. No problems with bluetooth, network connections or calling.

Third, they have a great blend of features. From being able to use opera mini to great gaming all the way to photos and music, their phones do many things well. While photography and music are their main focuses, detail is put into their other featues as well.

Their prices are always fair and their phones keep me interested.

Why do you love your Sony Ericsson?

iPhone has a virus

As odd as it might sound, the appearance of this Apple iPhone virus which has been reportedly making the rounds is a good thing for the Cupertino boys. Sources say that a new virus targets the iPhone, but only iPhone's which are unlocked. This could definitely aid Apple in convincing iPhone users to not purchase unlocked devices.

Though there is a spot of gray on this cloud. It appears that the virus in question was designed by an 11-year old kid. Let the "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?" jokes roll.

CompUSA Stores Closing

If you are fortunate to live in an area that has a CompUSA closing, there are sales on contract phones there with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint. I found a Blackberry Curve for $269.99 there. They are 40% off and no contract. YMMV. There are some pretty slick deals out there and this is one of them!

Consumer experiences in the spotlight

More than half of Nokia's CES exhibit will be dedicated to
demonstrating the consumer experiences that are the driving force behind
Nokia's transition into an Internet company. Some of the services and
applications on display include Nokia Maps; a fully-featured mapping and
navigation application that is available for Nokia's S60-based converged
devices, Widgets; lightweight, web-based applications that deliver
personalized content to Nokia devices, N-Gage; Nokia's advanced, connected
wireless game service, and Nokia Internet Radio, which delivers an
ever-growing selection of Internet radio stations directly to any Nokia
S60-based handset.

Along with these Nokia services, a number of exciting third-party
applications will also be highlighted at the Nokia CES 2008 exhibit. These
include SlingPlayer, which allows users to experience their home television
directly from their wireless device via Wi-Fi or 3G networks, Rhapsody, the
service that transforms the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet into a virtual
jukebox with millions of songs on demand, and Skype, the popular VoIP
service that is now available for the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet.

Driving responsible environmental practices

Nokia has long been the recognized leader in driving responsible
environmental practices, and at CES 2008, a number of these innovations
will be on display. The recently announced Nokia 3110 Evolve will be shown
for the first time in North America. The device features a range of
environmentally-focused features including covers which are made from over
50% renewable bio-materials, reduced size packaging, and a new charger that
uses 94% less energy than required by Energy Star standards.

With an eye to the future, the Nokia Eco Sensor concept will also be
shown for the first time in North America at CES 2008. The Nokia Eco Sensor
concept examines how green technologies may be used in the future to create
ever more sustainable devices. Inspired by the "three R's" principle --
reduce, reuse and recycle -- the concept explores a range of potential new
materials and technologies such as printed electronics, bio-materials and
reclaimed materials. It also looks at ways that mobile technology could
employ mobile sensing to monitor and report on both the health of the user
and the surrounding environmental conditions.

Within the environmental display, Nokia will also have a recycling
collection point where CES attendees can drop off old mobile phones and
accessories for proper recycling. Visitors to the exhibit will also be able
to see some of the environmental services available through Nokia devices.

It looks like Nokia is using their pull in the advanced device market to push things further than just good video recording phones with lots of space and GPS.

The slingplayer and nokia maps are going to be interesting to watch. They'll bring competition to google maps and other devices that play video from home.

Nokia is tryng to be successful while environmentally friendly! What a way to catch people's attention!

Motorola Z10

Motorola is getting into the cell phone camcorder market with their Z10. Nokia has been very successful in this market with the N95. This device looks more promising with it's size and style... It has a similar size to a razr but has a powerful set of features.

Motorola, today made it easy to capture, edit and share videos and images directly
from the mobile device with the introduction of MOTO(TM) Z10 at the 2008
International Consumer Electronics Show (Booth #8545, Central Hall).

The new MOTO Z10 is a complete, pocket-sized, mobile film studio. This
stylish kick slider makes it easy to capture high-quality video, edit
clips, create transitions between scenes and add title slides and a
soundtrack(1). Then, budding filmmakers can upload their creation to share
with friends and family through any number of Web sites such as YouTube,
Google, Yahoo! and ShoZu.

"With MOTO Z10, we are turning movie making and spontaneous creativity
into social activities. Now, anyone can capture and share life's moments
from almost anywhere in the world and make their unique perspective a part
of popular culture," said Stu Reed, president, Motorola Mobile Devices.

In addition to creating videos, MOTO Z10 features great media playback
capabilities. With a crystal-clear 2.2" QVGA screen that displays video at
30 frames per second in millions of colors, consumers can watch their own
films or downloaded content(2). The external storage slot will support an
external memory card with up to 32GB of capacity, when available.

MOTO Z10 also takes great pictures. One press of the dedicated camera
key launches the 3.2 megapixel camera in only 1.5 seconds. The Superfast
burst mode captures up to three images a second, so consumers will never
miss a frame of the action. The smart auto focus keeps pictures sharp while
intelligent auto-save automatically names and saves images directly to the
on-board media gallery or favorite media-sharing Web sites.

MOTO Z10 looks as sleek and stylish on the outside as it is
feature-packed inside. The ergonomic design is built with premium quality
materials, including spun stainless steel, polished metallic finish and
soft-feel textures. With 3.5G HSDPA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and Symbian/UIQ
software, MOTO Z10 represents the next generation of mobile device
technology for on-the-go content consumers and creators.

MOTO Z10 is expected to be available in Q1 2008. For more information,
specifications and images of MOTO Z10, please visit

CES 2008

The Consumer Electronics Show is underway in Las Vegas. I don't think T-Mobile will announce anything about their high speed 3G internet, however the new blackberry has been announced. We'll see which carriers pick it up this time around.

Word is that it has a touchscreen. It is unknown whether or not it replaces a conventional keypad or not, however.

-Coming soon-
